Two-step verification (MFA)

The AUAS highly values studying safely online. In pursuit of this, two-step verification (MFA) is being applied to an increasing number of applications.

Two-step verification: the whys and hows

Two-step verification is an extra layer of security when logging in. It does so by doubly checking the identity of the individual attempting to log in. In some cases this is done by verifying your log in attempt on your mobile device.

To gain access to Brightspace, Microsoft 365 and other applications a one-time activation of two-step verification is necessary.

Setting up two-step verification

Take ALL following steps of phase 1 and phase 2 to set up two-step verification on your mobiles device:

Phase 1

  1. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the App Store or Google Play Store on your mobile phone.
  2. On your laptop, log in to aka.ms/mfasetup using your AUAS email address and password.
  3. Click "Next" until a QR code appears.
  4. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile phone and select Add Account > Work or School Account > Scan QR Code.
  5. Scan the QR code displayed on your laptop, then click 'Next' on your laptop.
  6. You will receive a sign-in request as a test—approve it.
  7. On the website, click 'Next' and then 'Done'.

The first phase of two-step verification has now been successfully set up.

Phase 2

  1. Open an incognito window in Google Chrome on your laptop and navigate to https://aka.ms/mfasetup.
  2. Log in with your full AUAS email address and password.
  3. Select the call option. You will receive a call on your mobile phone and will be asked to press the # key. This will grant you access to the security portal.
  4. Under 'Security Info,' click the + icon to 'Add a sign-in method.'
  5. For 'Add method,' choose Authenticator app. Follow the steps and scan the QR code to add your account.
  6. Done? Continue. You'll receive a notification on the app for verification.
  7. Accept the code to ensure everything is working. Your Authenticator app will now be activated.
  8. Lastly, update your sign-in method at the top of your security settings from Phone to Microsoft Authenticator.

Your two-step verification has now successfully been set up. You can always alter the two-step verification or add an extra verification method. Additionally, it is possible to use your Apple Watch as a verification method.

Verification via phone call

If you’re visually impaired or would just rather avoid downloading apps, you can select the ‘Telephone’ option in the installation wizard. This will verify your identity by calling you and asking you to select the ‘#’ key on your mobile device.

Stuck without signal or an active internet connection? Use the code given by the Authenticator app. Don’t forget to re-register if your have a new mobile device or phone number.
